2017 Lexus RX vs. Toyota 4Runner
There’s a lot to love about luxury SUVs like the 2017 Lexus RX, but sometimes the fiercest competitors can come from what many wouldn’t consider luxury. The 2017 Toyota 4Runner is a top-tier model designed to compete with the best of the luxury SUV segment. Despite its seemingly non-luxury nameplate, the Toyota 4Runner continues to raise the bar for the automotive industry. So, how does it really compare to a luxury model like the Lexus RX? Time to find out.
The interior of the Lexus RX is marked by an industry-first 12.3-inch high-resolution split-screen multimedia display. Drivers can connect to vehicle through its standard Bluetooth, complete with voice-recognition software that allows you to control the climate system, make calls, and much more. Premium materials make up the entirety of the vehicle with leather upholstery perfectly complementing high-end trims, like wood and aluminum.
Designed for a wild adventure, the Toyota 4Runner features a durable, quality-driven interior itself. A 6.1-inch touchscreen comes standard across the range while premium materials offer increased durability. Like the RX, the 4Runner features Bluetooth connectivity with voice-recognition software. Despite its best efforts, the Toyota 4Runner can’t stand up to the sheer luxury and entertainment-driven technology found in the new Lexus RX.
Finding an SUV with a modern design isn’t easy, but fortunately, the Lexus RX brings the heat. A floating roofline accentuates sweeping character lines and tight curves designed to draw the eye along the sides. Full LED lighting complements the bold grille to create an aggressive design few competitors can match. Combine the athletic stance with the aerodynamic design of the Lexus RX and there’s little the competition can do to contend.
Like the RX, the Toyota 4Runner packs in a bold grille that ties the focus of the model to its blunt nose. Refined accents add styling cues that are underwhelming at first glance, but ultimately serve as a much-needed break from the 4Runner’s durable outer shell. Despite its utility-driven design and high ground clearance, the muscular stance and strong character lines create a sense of authority. While the RX and 4Runner comes from different worlds, the RX’s modern styling tops the rather standard look of the 4Runner.
It may not be as large at the 4Runner, but the Lexus RX packs in plenty of power. The standard 3.5-liter V6 engine comes mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and pumps out an impressive 295 hp and 268 lb-ft of torque. Drivers have their choice between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive with Active Torque Vectoring. MacPherson struts offer a smoother ride that makes bumpy roads a thing of the past.
The new Toyota 4Runner screams adventure with a 4.0-liter V6 engine that churns out 270 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque. While the five-speed automatic transmission is somewhat lacking, the available four-wheel drive with Active Traction Control system makes traveling on slick roadways a breeze. Available Bilstein high-performance shocks offer a smooth ride, even on the roughest terrain.
Needless to say, the Toyota 4Runner falls short when it comes to performance. The new Lexus RX offers more horsepower, top-tier struts, a more advanced transmission, and an advanced all-wheel drive system, effectively toppling the competition.
The 2017 Lexus RX dominates even the toughest competitors, and the Toyota 4Runner simply proves to be no match.
