2017 Lexus RC vs. 2017 BMW 4-Series
Luxury sports coupes, like the 2017 Lexus RC and BMW 4-Series, are designed to make their presence known. The segment itself generally offers excellent fuel economy, dominant style, top-tier comfort, and safety features fit for a family. While both the 2017 Lexus RC and 2017 BMW 4-Series sit at the top of the segment, there are a few significant differences that could change your mind. Check out this quick comparison to see why the 2017 Lexus RC is right for you.
Interior & Design
The Lexus RC brings plenty of heat to the segment with an interior fit for five kings and plenty of space to spare. Drivers can expect elegance combined with a sport-inspired cockpit that raises the bar for the luxury sports coupe segment. Luxurious details litter the cabin while ambient lighting, featuring an uplit design, dims and brightens automatically to fit your driving style.
The new BMW 4-Series is no pushover, matching the RC almost blow for blow with an ornate interior of its own. The spacious interior fits up to five passengers comfortably within a sophisticated cabin. No luxury sports coupe can claim a spot in the segment without plenty of attention to detail and the new 4-Series delivers. While the two models are insanely close, the Lexus RC pulls ahead thanks to its sport-inspired cockpit and unique lighting.
Technology & Safety
Despite its sporty styling and comfort-driven interior, the Lexus RC packs in plenty of standard convenience and safety technologies. LED lighting comes standard, as does an Anti-Lock Braking System with Brake Assist and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution. The Lexus Enform Safety Connect system offers a quick connection to roadside assistance via GPS location. Other standard features include a Backup Camera with Dynamic Gridlines and an eight-airbag system.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have yet to rate the BMW 4-Series, but comparable models within the brand’s lineup have scored well. The latest model features adaptive brake lights, an Automatic Collision Notification system, and plenty of airbags. Oddly enough, the luxury sports coupe lacks a rearview camera—a standard feature on many lower-tier vehicles. Drivers can opt for the rearview camera at extra cost, along with a blind-spot monitoring system, full LED headlights with automatic high beams, and a few other top safety technologies.
While the BMW 4-Series brings a strong set of features, it lacks equipment many drivers consider a given, especially in the luxury sports coupe segment. This gives the Lexus RC the upper hand.
The Lexus RC packs a punch with a standard 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that pumps out a responsive 241 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Drivers in search of more power can feed the demon with the 3.5-liter V6 engine that churns out an impressive 306 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. You can even opt for one of the most advanced all-wheel-drive systems on the market for optimized traction on almost all surfaces.
Stemming from a brand known for its performance, the BMW 4-Series comes stocked with a 2.0-liter TwinPower turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque designed to leave drivers pinned to their seats. If you need more power, consider stepping up to the 3.0-liter TwinPower turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine that pumps out 320 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque. Drivers can tap into the responsive xDrive Intelligent All-Wheel Drive System for increased responsiveness as well. While the BMW 4-Series may outpace the Lexus RC at first glance, the RC’s pure aerodynamic design brings it up to par with the performance-based 4-Series.
While the BMW 4-Series offers a little more in the performance department, the Lexus RC leads the luxury sports coupe in every other category. Though the 4-Series puts an emphasis on power, the RC offers a well-rounded sports coupe designed for everyday driving. Schedule a 2017 Lexus RC test drive
