2016 Lexus IS vs. 2016 BMW 3-Series
As two of the most popular compact luxury sedans on the market, the competition between the 2016 Lexus IS and 2016 BMW 3-Series is again fierce this year. While both are quality cars, there are important distinctions between the two.
Interior & Design
One of the areas where the 2016 IS definitely has a leg up is the interior. With premium quality materials making for comfortable and supportive seats and beautiful trim, the IS exudes luxury inside. Heated and ventilated front seats come standard in the 2016 Lexus IS so that you can be comfortable regardless of the weather. Both vehicles offer a surprisingly comfortable amount of leg room for a smaller sedan in both the front and back seats, though the IS offers a couple of extra inches in the front. The IS also offers nearly an additional cubic foot of trunk space as well, putting it on the larger size for its class. The exterior of each car differentiates them quite easily, as the Lexus IS features a bold and edgy exterior, while the BMW 3-Series sticks to a more conservative approach.
Safety & Technology
The 2016 Lexus IS and 2016 BMW 3-Series share a number of technology features including push-button start, Bluetooth capability, dual-zone climate control and an infotainment system. However, the Lexus IS offers additional standard features not found in the 3-Series including a moonroof, additional USB port, iPhone integration with Siri eyes-free, satellite radio and a larger 7-inch display screen compared to BMW’s 6.5-inch screen. The Lexus Enform Remote also allows drivers to use a smartphone app to do everything from start your Lexus, lock and unlock the car, or find where you’re parked. When it comes to safety, both vehicles received a 5-Star Overall Rating from the NHTSA and are equipped with a wide range of standard and available safety features.
The base model of the IS, the 2016 Lexus IS 200t, is equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that gives drivers quick acceleration and 241 horsepower. The 2016 Lexus IS 350 is outfitted with a 3.5-liter V6 that produces 306 horsepower. An eight-speed automatic transmission comes standard and pairs well with the engine. The base model of the 3-Series, the 2016 BMW 320i, has the same engine specs as the IS, but only puts out 180 horsepower. The 328i comes close at 240 horsepower, while other options are also available. The 3-Series also features an eight-speed automatic transmission standard. Both vehicles handle well and will give you a comfortable ride, though reviewers note that both of these really stand out about the IS.
Giving you a bolder first impression with its edgy exterior, a more luxurious and comfortable interior, and more standard features, the 2016 Lexus IS gets our vote.
